Kitchen clogs

Clogged drains can happen in any room at any time, whether it’s due to food scraps in the kitchen or hair and soap scum in the bathroom. Fortunately, many clogged drains are easily resolved without having to call in a professional.

The following methods are easy to do at home, and typically clear clogged drains in one or two applications:

  • Clean Strainers & Stoppers: Remove the strainers and stoppers and clear away any accumulated hair or soap buildup. You may have to scrub these parts thoroughly to make sure they are completely clean. Reassemble the parts and run the water to make sure it goes down the drain. This method is especially useful for showers, bathtubs, and bathroom sinks.
  • Use A Toilet Plunger: Remove the strainers and stoppers and clean off any buildup. With the water running, press and pull the plunger rapidly. The running water will help the plunger create a seal around the drain. After 10 presses, check to see if there is any gunk being forced up the drain. If so, keep plunging until water goes down the drain easily. If not, try another method.
  • Use A Drain Stick: After removing and cleaning the strainers and stoppers, insert the drain stick into your pipe. The stick is flexible and will bend when the pipe bends. Pull out the stick and clear off any buildup. Repeat this process until running water goes down the drain easily.
  • Chemical Drain Cleaners: Be sure you are buying the right product for your drain. Read the manufacturer’s instructions very carefully, and always wear gloves to avoid skin contact. To use items you already have at home, pour boiling water down your drain, and follow the water with a mixture of a quarter of a cup of baking soda and one cup of white vinegar. This method typically works best for smaller kitchen clogs.

Clogged Drain

If the clog persists, you will have to call for professional plumbing help. The clog may simply be too far down the pipe for a drain stick to reach, or the problem may be indicative of damaged or broken pipes.
