Interesting Facts About BFGoodrich Tires’ History

BFGoodrich Began as a Fire Hose Manufacturer

Founding in 1870 in Akron, OH, by Dr. Benjamin Franklin Goodrich, the venerable tire company started life as a rubber hose manufacturer. The goods were mainly sold to fire departments as water hoses to help quell infernos. In 1896, the company expanded its product line by adding pneumatic automobile tires, the first of their kind, to the inventory. Always striving to bring the latest technology to consumers, the company is also responsible for creating the first tubeless tires in 1947, as well as the first radial versions in 1965.

Motorsports Enthusiasts Have Used the Products for Over a Century

BFGoodrich TiresDue to the durability of the rubber, BFGoodrich Tires goods were used in the first cross-country road trip in 1903. A few years later, the company broadened its reach to include products for motorsports enthusiasts. The winning car in the 1914 Indianapolis 500 was outfitted with the company’s tires. The products have also helped race car drivers reach success in the Baja 1000, World Rally Championship, and other noteworthy competitions.

The Tires Have Been Used to Reach Aviation Milestones

Not merely limited to on-road and off-road use, BFGoodrich products have been used in the aviation industry since 1909. Although the tires were outfitted on airplanes for a number of historic flights, arguably the most famous is Charles Lindbergh’s non-stop transatlantic flight in Spirit of St. Louis in 1927. The products were also used in space aviation, specifically on the space shuttle Columbia in 1977.
