Summer is almost here, and the beautiful weather means it’s time to pull your motorcycle out of storage and get it ready for a new riding season. While regular tune-ups are important to keep your bike running well, you’ll still need a solid insurance policy to protect yourself and your ride on the road. If you’ve let your coverage lapse during the winter or haven’t reviewed your existing plan for a few years, here are a few things you need to consider before taking your motorcycle out.

Understand the Minimum Insurance Requirements

Every motorcyclist needs to have a bare minimum of coverage recommended by the state. For most riders, this means you must purchase liability coverage from a local insurance company. However, you may also be able to obtain liability coverage by paying for a motor vehicle liability bond or certificate of cash bond to cover any possible liability expenses if you’re found at-fault in an accident.

If you do choose to purchase standard motorcycle coverage, you’ll need to adhere to the state-required minimum coverage limits. This includes $25,000 of injury liability for one person, $50,000 for all injuries in an accident, and $25,000 of property damage in one accident. Keep in mind that this only protects other riders and drivers involved in the accident — the coverage cannot be used to help you pay for your personal medical expenses or cover the cost of repairs to your bike, moped, or scooter. If you’re looking for more comprehensive coverage to fully protect you and your ride, speak with your insurance agent.

Policies Do Not Waive Your Responsibility to Follow The Law

InsuranceEven though insurance coverage will help cover unexpected expenses, it doesn’t mean you get to ride however you wish. You will still need to obey the speed limit and the rules of the road. This includes Alabama’s helmet law. Anytime you’re on your bike, whether as a passenger or the driver, you need to wear a helmet. No amount of liability coverage will waive this requirement.
