Parkinson’s Awareness month is now over.  It was a month filled with enthusiasm and excitement. From my perspective, every April outshines the last.  All month long, patient advocates throughout the country took action by lobbying their congressman, participating in road races, raising money, and educating themselves.  It’s natural to take a breather and exhale, but there is much work to be done. We need to continue the momentum to improve care and advance research towards a cure

Those living with Parkinson’s will face the disease long after the end of April. To stay active and engaged throughout the year, please consider doing one or all of the following.

  •  Reach Out to Somebody with Parkinson’s

If you know somebody with Parkinson’s, please consider reaching out to them.  This can be a very isolating disease - both physically and emotionally.

  • Participate in a Clinical Trial

Some clinical trials are never completed.  The lack of participation is often cited as the main reason. You don’t need Parkinson’s to participate.  CAP is always involved in clinical trials.  If you want to participate, please contact us.  Alternately, the Michael J. Fox Foundation is another source for a find a clinical trial that might be right for you.

  • Raise Money for Research

Consider participating in a fundraising event or hosting one yourself.  Research is very expensive to take a drug from the lab to pharmacy shelves.  There are many ways to raise money.  CAP has organized wine tastings, road races, and gala events.  If you think you want to organize an event, please contact CAP.  We will gladly assist you to make it happen.

  • Educate Yourself and Others

Learning about the disease and how it affects PWP’s daily lives could change people’s perceptions and create a sense of urgency for better treatments and a cure.

Special Note:   On April 7th, CAP hosted a Wellness Expo at the Courtyard by Marriott in Cromwell, CT with twenty-five vendors including those from the pharmaceutical, medical, exercise, nutrition, and home care arenas.  Attendance was outstanding with close to three-hundred people attending the event.  A special thanks to Allyson Kinney, a CAP Board member, who organized the event.

CAP is trying to help our members live lives today, while trying to find a cure for tomorrow.  We need your help.  Consider volunteering on one of our committees.  My goal is ten new committee members by the end of June. If you’re interested, please contact me at karl@parkinsonsct.org.

Warm Regards,
