Summer is around the corner, which means that pools will be opening soon. When partaking in summer swimming fun, it’s essential to take care of your eyes. You don’t have to miss out on the seasonal splashing; follow these five simple tips from eye doctors to keep your eyes healthy when swimming.

5 Tips to Keep Your Eyes Healthy at the Pool

1. Wear Glasses or a Hat

You may not realize it, but your eyes can actually get sunburnt. If you’re headed for a dip on a particularly sunny day, be sure to bring your favorite pair of sunglasses or hat to help keep the sun out of your eyes. Because the sun reflects off bodies of water, you’re more likely to be exposed to damaging rays when you’re in the pool.

eye doctor2. Wear Goggles

The chemicals in a pool are designed to keep the water levels stable and destroy bacteria. These compounds can be hard on your eyes – especially the tear film that coats and protects them. Wearing goggles will keep the pool water out of your eyes and let you see underwater.

3. Use Eye Drops

Another common occurrence after swimming in a pool with no goggles is dry eye. Because the chemicals in the pool can damage protective tear film, your eyes are more prone to becoming dry. This can cause itching, pain, and burning. Using eye drops after you get out of the water, on rest period, and at home after a long day in the pool will keep your eyes hydrated. If you’re unsure which eye drops are best, consult with your eye doctor to find the right ones for your needs.

4. Stay Hydrated

Another quick way to develop dry eyes is by not getting enough water while you’re splashing around. Drinking at least eight to 10 glasses of water a day will keep your body hydrated and your eyes moist. If you experience frequent dry eyes during the summer or any other time, talk with your eye doctor about solutions to avoid this issue.

5. Wash Your Eyes

When you get home after a day of swimming, make sure to wash your eyes with water to help clear any lingering chemicals or pool water. Even if you only took a quick dip and used goggles, it’s still a good idea to rinse your eyes to ensure they’re free of pool debris.
