I am not talking about Alphabet as in Google, nor am I singing my ABCs even though it is a very popular hit with our toddlers.  What I am talking about is what do all these technology acronyms mean?  As a Veteran, I thought the military had cornered the market on acronyms, but technology has the military beat, easily.  While I could write a book on technology alphabet soup, I am going to focus on three front-running acronyms in technology today.  I am quite positive that by the time I finish this, there will be even more acronyms to discuss.

Software as a Service (SaaS)

Probably the largest deployment, SaaS delivery is simply a cloud deployment model accessed through the web via your managed it services provider or similar vendor.  You log onto a web portal, gain access to the tools you need and you are instantly connected to your data.  The real beauty of this deployment model is that there is generally no requirement for any specialized software installed on your computer nor is there a requirement for you to manage anything but your business.  Rather, all you need is a web browser of your choosing and off you go.  This allows your business to be very nimble and your cloud technology is near completely hands off.  Computer tech support is focused at the core, not on the periphery.

Platform as a Service (PaaS)

This one is tricky.  This is more about the provision of cloud component applications through middleware references. .NET is one example of a middleware reference.  Java is another example.  Developers can create new customized applications for you by using the PaaS environment.  Once the software developer creates new code and validates it, the update is further deployed to you in the Infrastructure as a Service environment.  This platform provides great freedom for the developer as it is provisioned over the web and the developers do not have to worry about the software itself while they are developing enhancements.

Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS)

While PaaS is a bit tricky to understand and SaaS is very simple to understand, the IaaS environment has a clear line in the sand between networking/virtualization and Operating System/Applications.  Ion Technology Group can perform the computer maintenance and management while your business manages the front end, such as the applications you want to use.  You can think of this platform as all the hardware is provided to you and your business takes care of the rest.  Smaller businesses will make the leap to a SaaS environment and larger businesses generally opt for the IaaS environment, as they need to maintain control over the application delivery and workflow changes.

It is as clear as mud, right?  Maybe this graphic will help dust you off.

I hope that the chart above helps provide clarity with regard to what is happening where.  What model is best for you?  There is no one size fits all and they can help you navigate these difficult waters.  Please contact Ion Technology Group to have a conversation about your needs and requirements at (856) 719-1818.  It does not have to be complicated, but it does have to be right.
