The phrase “root canal” strikes fear in the hearts of patients on their way to the dentist. But does this tooth-saving procedure deserve the negative reputation it’s garnered? Jerry A. Laws, DDS & Caitlin Miller, DMD, a family dentistry practice in Lexington, NC, dispels misconceptions about this common dental procedure.

Root Canal Myths

1. Painful

For many people, a root canal is synonymous with pain. However, this exaggeration was compounded over time. This belief most likely has its roots in the past when primitive dentistry meant that the procedure may have resulted in considerable pain. Today, anesthesia or sedation is used during root canals. The procedure causes no more discomfort than a filling and is a piece of cake compared to tooth extractions.

2. Severe Pain Warrants a Root Canal

root canalA root canal is intended to save a tooth suffering from decay or infection of the pulp layer. These ailments often result in throbbing or pain in the surrounding area of the mouth, but this isn’t always the case. Your dentist can perform several tests, including a percussion, temperature, or pulp vitality test to determine if a root canal is necessary.

3. Health Complications

You may have read or heard about root canals resulting in other illnesses or infections. However, this is another falsehood. This myth stems from research conducted in the 1920s by Dr. Weston Price, who, based on animal studies, concluded that these procedures could result in arthritis, kidney disease, and heart diseases. However, no modern scientific evidence supports this claim. In fact, root canal procedures kill and remove the bacteria trapped in the pulp of tooth roots, reducing the chance of more serious infections.
