If you’re a car aficionado, then owning a classic vehicle is probably on your bucket list. However, due to their age, antique cars require special care after being protected in storage during the harsh winter. Here are a few tips for bringing your antique car out of storage to extend its longevity and keep it in pristine condition.

What to Do When Taking Your Classic Car Out of Winter Storage

1. Check Fluid Levels

You should check the fluid levels for coolant, brakes, fuel, and steering. An octane booster should be added to the gas tank if you didn’t use a fuel stabilizer before putting the car into storage. It’s also recommended to get an oil change as soon as you can to ensure your engine can safely handle any driving.

2. Inspect Tires

The optimal levels should be located in the owners manual or the driver’s side doorjamb. Make sure the tires still look pristine and do not have any bulges, cracks, or other signs of damage.

3. Test Battery

Your battery has a better chance of surviving the winter if it’s stored with a maintainer or trickle charger. If you used one, then all you have to do is check the maintainer to confirm that the battery has been charged. The freezing temperatures of the winter can drain batteries, so you might need to replace it altogether if you didn’t use a trickle charger. In addition, examine the battery for signs of oxidation and rust.

4. Look Over Wiring & Engine Hoses

Depending on where you store your vehicle, your wiring and hoses could be susceptible to damage from rodents. Make sure cracks and corrosion haven’t corrupted them, either.

5. Examine All Lights

Turn on the headlights, brakes, turn signals, brights, and hazards to ensure they’re all still working. Replace any that have burnt out during the winter, so you won’t get pulled over when you take it out for the first drive of the year.

If you’re taking your antique car out of storage for the warmer seasons, consider going to the Charlotte AutoFair in Mecklenburg, NC. It’s the largest collector vehicle event in the southeast region, so you’ll have access to the most incredible, rare antique cars. The auto show is held every April and September with over 10,000 vendor spaces and thousands of antique cars. If you’re interested in learning more about the show or purchasing a vendor space during the three-day event, give the organizers a call at (704) 841-1990 or visit their website.
