Sometimes a tooth extraction is necessary to preserve your overall oral health. Maybe a molar is decayed beyond repair or causing overcrowding in your mouth–whatever the case may be, if your dentist recommends removal, it’s for good reason. Knowing what to expect before the procedure can ease your nerves and ensure you get the best results possible.

A Guide to Tooth Extractions

1. Before Surgery

dentistCheck with your dentist if you are allowed to eat or drink anything beyond water on the morning of the tooth extraction. Take a few days off work to rest and recover–even if you feel fine, you may be swollen. Arrange for a friend or family member to drive you home after the procedure.

2. During Surgery

Your dentist will provide a local anesthetic so you won’t feel any pain. They will then pull the tooth, remove any remaining pieces, and clean the area to get rid of bacteria. Usually gauze is then packed in the socket to encourage a clot–only after healing is complete can you get a dental implant installed.

3. After Surgery

Ice the jaw and rest with your head elevated on pillows to keep swelling down. Take any medications as prescribed. Do not eat or drink any hot liquids until the anesthetic has worn off or you risk scalding yourself.

4. Eating & Drinking

Avoid chewing on the side where the tooth was extracted for the first few days. Stick to soft foods like cottage cheese, apple sauce, and soups. Do not use a straw for drinking, as the resulting suction can cause the clot in your mouth to loosen and delay healing.
