If you’ve been dreaming of a Grand Canyon tour, you may be confused as to when you should visit. Luckily, the park is so beautiful and expansive, you’ll find something to enjoy any time of year. The ideal time comes down to personal preference, as well as what you are expecting from the visit. When planning a trip to the Grand Canyon, consider the following tips to get the timing right.

A Guide to Visiting the Grand Canyon in Any Season

Spring

Those visiting the Grand Canyon from March through May will enjoy ideal sightseeing temperatures. Plus, in the spring, you’ll encounter fewer tourists, so you can enjoy the park without the crowds. Because spring is still considered the off-season, you will also have an easier time booking hotels and rental cars. Temperatures do fluctuate drastically in the spring, so dress in layers.

Summer

Grand Canyon TourThe peak season for Grand Canyon tours is summer. Although you will get to experience the entire park, hiking trails, and majestic views, there will be many more tourists visiting during this time. As a result, you will need to plan ahead, as hotels fill up quickly. Temperatures are at an all-time high during the summer, so pack light and bring sunscreen and plenty of bottled water. You may experience heavy rainstorms in July, but they usually pass quickly.

Fall

Temperatures begin to decline in September, meaning fewer tourists and less competition for accommodations. Fall is also the ideal time for hiking, with temperatures ranging from the 30s to the mid-70s. You will also find more trails open throughout the park, so you can enjoy your hike without pushing through crowds of tourists. Although temperatures can be mild, they tend to dip during the night. Pack warm clothes, and be prepared for adverse weather conditions during the fall—snowfall usually begins in October.

Winter

Although it may not seem logical, visiting the Grand Canyon in the Winter can be quite peaceful. Although most trails are closed, you can still visit the South Rim trails, which remain open year-round. Snow in the Grand Canyon accumulates quickly, so pack warm clothing and the necessary gear to ensure a safe visit.
