As a pet owner, you want to give your furry friend the best life possible. You spend money giving them the best food and even hours walking them outside, but in serious situations, we often find ourselves unprepared. April is Pet First Aid Awareness Month, and it’s important to prepare and understand the right pet care system needed to keep your pet safe in those unimaginable situations. The pet professionals at Almost Home Pet Resort in Covington, KY, can help you prepare and give your pet the best services.

3 Pet Care First Aid Tips to Keep Your Animal Safe

1. Dehydration & Heat Stroke

On those hot summer days, it’s important you provide your pet with a cool, shaded environment and avoid keeping them in your vehicle or without the necessary amount of water. If your pet is suffering from a heat stroke, they will show signs of vomiting, heavy or difficulty breathing, brick red colored gums, and a loss of balance.  If these occur, move your pet to a cool, shaded environment and call your veterinarian or visit the nearest pet hospital immediately.

2. Poisoning

If you find your pet consuming a dangerous food, a household cleaning product, or a foreign object, it’s important that you call your vet or the Animal Poison Control Center immediately at (888) 426-4435. Signs of poisoning include drooling, foaming at the mouth, or dilated pupils.

3. Animal Bites & Attacks

If your pet is attacked by another animal or is injured and bleeding, it’s important to see your veterinarian to avoid infection and limit the chance for more damage. Immediately wrap the wound area with gauze and apply pressure until you reach the pet care provider. Do not remove the bandages or pressure from the wound area. Also, to keep yourself safe, never try to break up fighting animals.
