At a certain point, a woman may decide to go off birth control to start a family or for a health-related reason. While each patient is different, the decision to stop taking this medication may come with some side effects. The team from TTNYD&D OBGYN, a women’s health center in Honolulu, HI, is here with a few of the most common symptoms women experience.

5 Possible Side Effects of Going off Birth Control

1. Acne

The progestin and estrogen in combination pills can actually lower the hormones known for producing acne. After you stop taking the pill, you may notice an increase in this skin condition—especially leading up to your period.

Hormones also play a role in your body’s weight regulation. Progestin-only forms of birth control such as injections, intrauterine devices, and certain pills may cause initial weight gain, so ceasing to use this medication may cause you to lose a few pounds.

3. Heavier or Abnormal Periods

If you had regular periods previous to taking contraception, it may take a few months before your cycle returns to normal. Many women also report lighter periods on the pill, so you may begin to notice heavier bleeding and cramping.

4. Headaches

According to one study, more than half of women experience migraines during, or leading up to, menstruation. Once you begin ovulating again and have your period, hormone-related headaches could affect you—especially if they were a prior issue.

5. Reduced Breast Size

Some women notice an increase in breast size when they first start taking the pill. If this happened to you, it’s possible your breasts may go back to their previous size after you stop taking birth control.
