Storage units provide the perfect place to stash personal items you don’t immediately need. If you’re one of the many Maui natives who loves catching some waves, you may have collected quite a few surfboards over the years. When you don’t have anymore room in your home for your gear, storage is the best place for it. To get your board ready, keep the following tips in mind.

How to Get Your Surfboard Ready for Storage

1. Clean It

Before heading to your storage unit, make sure your surfboard is clean. Rinse it thoroughly to remove lingering saltwater, as it is corrosive over time. Use the shower at the beach to wash the board down, and dry it off so it’s completely free of moisture and won’t accumulate mold or mildew while in storage.

2. Strip the Wax

This step is necessary for protecting the board from accumulating dirt and dust as it sits unused. The wax will also dry out while sitting in storage, making it more difficult to remove when you’re ready to ride the waves again.

3. Protect It

Place your surfboard in its bag and wrap it in bubble wrap or other protective covering. If you have the original box, store the surfboard inside to further protect it from scratches in your storage unit. Once you put it inside, do not store anything on top of it that could damage the surface.

When you’re ready to get your board back out of storage, simply give it a wipe down before applying a new layer of wax.
