While there are as many as 15 types of cemeteries, including church, public, lawn park, veteran, and memorial options, there are four basic gravestone plots. Most families opt for a larger one so their members are laid to rest together. If you are in the midst of choosing a cemetery and headstone, here is some information about each plot to help you determine what is right for your family.

4 Different Gravestone Plots

1. Single

These are for the burial of one deceased individual. They remain the most common option among cemeteries and feature space for only one casket. Single plots typically include a headstone or other smaller grave marker.

2. Double or “Companion”

Double, or companion, plots provide space for two caskets. The caskets are either buried side-by-side or one on top of the other. Married couples usually purchase these. Double plots where one casket is buried above the other save cemetery space and are often more affordable than side-by-side options.

3. Family

gravestoneThese have space for multiple members of a single family. Caskets are either buried side-by-side or on top of one another, depending on the cemetery’s space constraints and how many members there are in the family. Many of these plots feature large, single gravestones with each person’s name; however, some still include individual, smaller headstones.

4. Urn

Some people wish to be cremated but still want their ashes buried in a cemetery. Urn plots take up significantly less space than caskets and make it possible to bury many containers in one plot. They create a cost-effective way for deceased family members to be buried together. Some cemeteries feature designated spaces for urns known as “urn gardens.”
