Everyone’s hair is unique so, unfortunately, the Internet can’t answer all of your hair-related questions. That’s where your stylist comes in. Thanks to years of training, this professional has an intimate understanding of different lengths and textures. Here’s what you should ask before your next haircut.

Top 5 Questions to Ask Your Stylist

1. How Often Should I Wash My Hair?

haircutFor some hair textures like curly, dehydrated or compromised hair, daily shampooing can further dry out the strands and cause other scalp problems. For others, particularly those who use smoothing styling products, daily or more frequent shampooing is essential. Ask your stylist what frequency of washes works best for your locks. If you use silicone based conditioners or smoothing/anti-frizz products you may find that the oil your body produces cannot be absorbed into the cuticle therefore leaving you with dehydrated strands and an oily scalp. Consult with your hairdresser on which conditioners are best for you.

2. What Kind of Hair Products Should I Use?

When you do wash your hair, you should use shampoos and conditioners that complement your natural texture and are free of petrochemicals such as silicone. Many hair salons recommend using organic hair products or naturally derived ones as they are gentler on both hair and skin. They’re also better for the environment.

3. How Often Should I Cut My Hair?

Like with shampooing, haircut schedules differ from person to person. If you want to maintain your current length, the general rule of thumb is a trim every four to eight weeks. But there are other factors to consider including your lifestyle and budget. If you often heat style your locks, for example, you may need more frequent cuts to avoid breakage.

4. Which Haircut Is Best for My Face Shape?

organic hair productsThe perfect haircut should complement both your face shape and natural hair texture. It should also fit your lifestyle; you don’t want a style that requires more maintenance than you’re willing to put in. Unfortunately, hair inspiration photos can’t give you this information. But a stylist can. Have high-cheek bones? Opt for a face framing layers and bangs. Are you more of a square shape? Opt for "beachy" layers and curved bangs. Heart shaped? Try out a short structured bob or pixie with side swept bangs. Round? Try Long flowing layers and a long side swept cheek bone bang.

5. Which Hair Color Is Best for My Skin Tone?

If you want to experiment with a color besides your natural one, then ask your stylist which shade best matches your skin tone. Opt for colors that compliment and contrast with your eyes. Even if you you opt for a color that may not naturally suit you if you're willing to own it you can pull it off with dramatic makeup and that new outfit you've been dying to wear. You may be surprised at what colors you can pull off until you try them..
