Using painter’s tape is an easy fix for protecting glass while painting. Unfortunately, it also leaves unwanted marks on your window glass. That’s why many people try to find a quality, functional alternative. Next time you’re painting the home, try one of these tips to eliminate the need for tricky tape.

3 Tips to Avoid Painter’s Tape While Protecting Your Glass

1. Masking Liquid

One of the simplest ways to protect your glass while painting is by using masking liquid. Before you begin, apply a layer of the liquid along the edge of the glass; it will quickly dry to a gel. With the gel in place, you can paint without worry. Since it’s water-based, it peels off easily afterward. You can use a painting razor to scrape the masking liquid gel away from the glass, and the flat edge to wipe away any leftovers.

2. Lip Balm

glassFor those comfortable with a home remedy, using lip balm works just as well as masking liquid and doesn’t require scraping afterward. Apply the lip balm generously to the edges of your glass — you can use a cotton swab if you don’t want to get your fingers dirty. Afterward, wipe it off with a rag.

3. Paper Strips

Using paper strips to catch any drops of stray paint is similar to painter’s tape, but it’s easier. You can cut strips of paper using a penknife or a ruler to ensure straight edges. After doing so, wet them in a pan of water, but only slightly and not until they’re falling apart. They can then be stuck to the glass. Once they’re in the right place, run a dry paintbrush over them to secure them in place. When you’re done painting, the strips come right off, leaving no residue behind.
