Spring is a great time to check on your HVAC and do a cleanup to keep your heating and cooling running well all year. With a few simple fixes, you can improve your system’s performance and reduce utility costs. Here are ways to include HVAC in your spring cleaning routine.

Spring Maintenance Tips for a Better HVAC

HVAC Checkup

HVACBefore each new season, check your system’s components. Inspect hardware, and clean up dust and grime for optimal performance. Ensure there are no broken parts or leaks, and test the thermostats to make sure they’re reading properly.

One critical part to change is your filter. Filters collect and trap dust and other particles, and to stop those elements from getting into your ducts, it’s best to replace both furnace and air conditioning filters regularly.  Depending on the size and type of filter, you may have to switch them out anywhere from one to six months.

Once your HVAC equipment is cleaned and inspected, clear out the dust and grime from your vents. Dust each room’s vents and coverings to remove any buildup, and stop it from blowing around your home.

Outside your home, check to make sure the compressors and heat pumps are not blocked by vegetation or other items—clean up the area to ensure optimal air flow and drainage. Make sure your gutters are also angled properly and not sending excess moisture onto or near your HVAC’s outdoor components.

Repairs & Touchups

Aside from performing HVAC repairs and cleaning your equipment, there are other ways to ensure your system doesn’t overwork and wear down too quickly. Keeping your home energy efficient in other ways takes the burden off your heating and cooling while balancing your utility bills.

Walk around your home, and check for holes or gaps where air could be seeping through. You can also make sure the external temperatures stay outside by caulking around the windows and doors. Check the weatherstripping, replace anything cracked or loose, inspect the screens, and replace torn ones. When your home is properly sealed, your HVAC will have an easier time keeping comfortable temperatures inside.
