Since it’s creation in the 1970s, balayage has quickly become one of the most popular hair coloring techniques. But before you try this trend for yourself, there are a few things you should know. Here’s a quick guide courtesy of Bloom Beauty Lounge, a hair salon specializing in balayage in New York City.

A Guide to Balayage

What Is Balayage?

hair salonBalayage is a freehand hair coloring technique that creates a gradient of dark to light to give your locks a natural, multi-tonal finish without a regrowth line. The word itself is French for “to sweep,” referring to the sweeping motion hair stylists do when applying the dye. It began in Carita, a prestigious Parisian spa, in the 70s and has since become a staple in hair salons around the world.

Is It Suitable for All Hair Types?

No matter if your hair is naturally light or dark, fine or coarse, straight or curly, balayage will work for you. It also works for a variety of lengths apart from very short or cropped hair. That’s because the strands don’t give the stylist enough space to create a seamless gradient. So, if you’re rocking a pixie cut and want to change your hair color, you may want to consider a different technique.

How Does It Work?

Much like traditional hair coloring, balayage involves hand-painting dye or bleach on the surface of the hair strand. However, the strands are not fully saturated until the tips, thus ensuring proper blending. Also, stylists often do not use foil during this process unless the desired result requires it.

Balayage can be used to add simple highlights or color the entire head. Therefore, the process can take anywhere from 45 minutes to three hours. It’s well worth the wait, though, because it not only gives you a gorgeous, natural finish but also lasts longer than traditional coloring techniques.

How Long Does It Last?

balayageThe vibrancy of your hair color depends on several factors including how often you wash your hair, what products you use, and how frequently you heat style. But, overall, balayage lasts longer than traditional techniques and doesn’t require as much upkeep. That’s because the careful blending and multi-tonal dye allows the hair to grow out naturally, so you don’t have to worry about harsh roots or regrowth lines.
