Just because it’s raining doesn’t mean you can’t still enjoy a game of golf. If you’ve got a tee time you’d rather not cancel due to a little rain, then you’ll benefit from a few tips from the professionals for teeing off in less than hospitable weather. Below you’ll find some pointers to help you deal with those spring showers that seem to come and go so easily on the Hawaiian Islands.

How to Enjoy Golf in the Rain

1. Dress Accordingly

Playing 18 holes in the pouring rain will be unbearable if you’re not wearing the right gear, so dress the part. You want your head and hands to stay warm and dry, so wear a cap and bring a few pairs of golf gloves if you’ve got more than one; this will ensure your grip won’t slip. Keeping your body’s core comfortable is also important, so wear a few layers and top it off with a waterproof windbreaker.

2. Keep Your Equipment Dry

golfGolfing in the rain can do some damage to your equipment, in addition to making it much harder to grip your clubs, so you’ll need to keep your gear dry. You can do so by investing in a waterproof bag cover, or fashioning a DIY cover out of an umbrella. Your clubs will get a little wet when using them, so carry a few extra towels in a Ziploc bag to wipe them down before placing them back in your bag again.

3. Know the Conditions

Before teeing off in inclement weather, being aware of the conditions is key because they’ll drastically affect ball speed and direction. If you’ve got the wind at your back, you’ll be able to swing a bit easier, but keep in mind that any spin you put on your ball while hitting it will be intensified in such conditions. Professionals also recommend playing up a club and a half in windier conditions.
