Every vehicle outputs exhaust gases as it runs. This is not always noticeable, as the emissions are often colorless and clear. In some instances, however, these gases can take on an alarming, unfamiliar shade. If your vehicle is emitting an oddly colored gas, it is likely one of the following issues has occurred.

3 Car Exhaust Colors & What They Mean

1. White Exhaust

If puffs of white smoke are exiting your pipes, check your cooling system. A leak could be causing coolant to drip onto the hot engine. Coolant is responsible for keeping your car a steady, constant temperature. A leak means you run the risk of damaging the exhaust system, melting engine components, or warping the cylinder heads.

2. Black Exhaust

exhaustBlack smoke is the most common exhaust color and is often seen with trucks. Black exhaust is a sign your vehicle is using too much gas and lacking air, often the result of a clogged or backed-up air filter. When filters become too dirty, air is incapable of cycling through and mixing with the gasoline. Thus, the imbalance occurs. Correct this issue by visiting an auto repair center to replace the filter.

3. Blue Exhaust

One of the less common exhaust colors is a striking blue. If this is noticeable from your car, visit a mechanic right away. Blue smoke is a sign of an oil leak. Without enough oil, the components in your engine will not be properly lubricated. Excessive friction without lubrication can cause the engine to wear down at a much faster rate. A professional will find and seal the leak and ensure oil levels are sufficient.
