Early education doesn’t just take place in preschool. In fact, parents play a major role in a child’s learning at a young age. One way you can give your little one a jump-start on learning is to read together at home. Below, Les Enfants Preschool in Palisades Park, NJ, shares a few books they recommend reading together before bed to help your kids develop early reading habits.

3 Books to Read With Your Children

1. “The Giving Tree” by Shel Silverstein

A tree falls in love with a little boy, and they spend all of their time together. Soon, however, the boy grows, and his needs change from wanting to eat the tree’s apples to cutting down her branches to build a house. Eventually, he no longer visits the tree because he is too busy. This full-circle story shows kids the importance of being thankful for what they have and gives them a glimpse of some simple dialogue.

2. “Goodnight Moon” by Margaret Wise Brown

early-education-palisades-park-njThis toddler classic features brilliantly colored pictures that share the story of a bunny’s journey to sleep as it says goodnight to everything around it. The rhythm and rhyming of this tale are used in early education to teach kids about words that sound alike, so reading it at home is a great start. It might also help lull your little one right to sleep.

3. “Where the Wild Things Are” by Maurice Sendak

This beautifully illustrated book shares the story of Max, a young boy who retreats into a dream world where he is the king of a group of lovable monsters. Kids love the stunning pictures and excitement of using their imaginations to follow along with this popular children’s tale. Building more stories off of books they’ve read is a part of early education, and parents can practice this at home by asking your kids what their own imaginary world full of monsters would look like.

Whether your toddlers like fantastical stories or poems, they can benefit from reading with you. Encourage your children to follow along with the words as you read aloud. This might help them learn to identify letters and sounds more quickly as they head into early education classes.
