Sleep apnea can have detrimental impacts on your overall well-being, from leaving you tired throughout the day to causing cardiovascular and breathing problems. If you’ve already visited a sinus doctor and tried non-surgical treatments like breathing machines, it may be time to consider a procedure for your sleep apnea. But what surgeries are available, how are they performed, and will they be successful? Consider the following three when discussing sleep apnea treatments with a physician.

3 Surgeries for Sleep Apnea

1. Nasal Surgery

A septoplasty is generally an outpatient procedure and corrects a deviated nasal cavity. When the septum is deviated, the divider between the two nostrils is crooked, resulting in a partial or complete blockage of the canal. This surgery corrects the shifted nasal cavity and makes it easier for air to pass through the sinuses. When considering a septoplasty as a sleep apnea treatment, it’s essential to talk to your sinus doctor about the factors contributing to your condition and if a deviated septum plays a role.

2. Palatal Surgery

sinus doctorPalatal surgeries address abnormalities in the soft palate and usually allow the airway to widen after recovery. A common palatal surgery for sleep apnea is the uvulopalatopharyngoplasty (UPPP), which is performed on the back of the roof of your mouth. During a UPPP, the sinus doctor will remove excess tissue to open up the airway, making it easier for you to breathe. Palate issues are one of the most common factors behind sleep apnea, so talk with your sinus doctor about this surgery if yours is connected to this symptom.

3. Tongue-Base Surgery

This typically involves administering radio frequency waves on the back of the tongue to gently reduce the volume of tissue. It usually requires four to six sessions and results in a firmer, smaller tongue base. If your sleep apnea is connected to tongue-related issues, your sinus doctor will discuss this surgery with you and let you know whether you’re a candidate.
