The term "blacktop" describes asphalt or any other dark material used to surface roads and driveways. Over time, this material will crack, leading to further damage if the issue isn’t addressed promptly. There are several common causes behind the blemishes, and understanding what they are will help you prevent them.

Why Does Blacktop Crack?

1. Road Salt

Many areas, especially northern states like Wisconsin, experience high levels of snow and ice throughout the winter. The state is responsible for keeping the roads clear and safe to drive on. They, along with many homeowners, often use salt to expedite the melting process. While this is effective, it also causes that melted moisture to seep into any minor cracks or splits. When the temperatures reach freezing overnight, the moisture will re-freeze and expand. This causes the cracks to grow in size. Preventing this issue is simple: Use sand instead. This material also offers increased tire traction.

2. Nearby Tree Roots

blacktopTrees add wherever they are planted. However, if not properly managed, they can actually cause cracks in blacktop surfaces. As they grow, the roots extend outward in search of water and nutrients. The further they travel and the thicker they get, the more movement they cause within the earth. This movement can greatly affect the asphalt above by shifting the ground and creating pressure. The best way to prevent this is to plant small shrubs or flowers instead or simply remove nearby foliage in general.

3. Excessive Sunlight

Just as too much water can damage your blacktop, not enough can be equally harmful. This is especially true in the summer months, when the days are longer and the sunlight is harsh. Because of the black coloring of the asphalt, the ground quickly absorbs a high amount of heat and holds onto it. When the material dries out, it will wear down and break apart. Using a high-quality sealant over your blacktop can prevent this.
