As the weather starts to warm up, the likelihood that you’ll need to use your snow thrower decreases. However, before you just shove it to the back of your garage and forget about it until the snow hits next winter, there are some important steps you need to take. Preparing your snow thrower for storage decreases the need for repairs and can prolong its lifespan. Here are some simple tips to keep in mind.

Important Steps to Take When Storing Your Snow Thrower

Empty the Tank of Gasoline & Add Stabilizer

Leaving a snow thrower’s tank full of gasoline throughout the spring and summer can lead to gum deposits and acid buildup. Once you’re sure that the final snow of the season has fallen, run the engine for long enough to empty the tank or use a siphon to remove excess fuel. You can also add a stabilizer liquid to the tank and run it for about ten minutes to keep the tank in good shape while it’s not in use.

Change the Oil & Lubricate

For machines with four-cycle engines, a quick oil change can keep the insides in good working condition throughout the offseason. You can also take the engine oil and apply it to the spark plug hole and pistons. This eliminates any potential friction that might occur from unintentional shifts. It’s also a good idea to take a look at your owner’s manual to see if any other parts need lubrication.

Clean & Cover the Machine

Clean the surface of the snow thrower, touch up any areas where the paint may have chipped, and apply a rust preventative. When you go to store it, protect it with a tarp or fitted covering. Store it inside where it will be out of the way. If you don’t have enough room to keep it indoors, be sure to use the cover and place it on a platform or shelf off the ground.
