Caring for a child can be a very rewarding experience that shows a high level of love and commitment. Caregivers can avoid experiencing high levels of stress by taking a few steps and avoiding others. Make your important role easier by minding these do’s and don’ts.

Do:

Ask for Help When You Need It.

When you feel like you’re taking on more than you can manage, don’t hesitate to ask loved ones for help. They might not realize you’re feeling overwhelmed or know how to help. Make specific requests, such as asking a spouse to handle grocery shopping or siblings to cover your carpool day.

Stay Organized.

Organization will help make your role as a caregiver easier, especially if you have a helper step in. Create a master list with vital information in a spot that’s easy for everyone to access. This should include emergency contacts such as neighbors, physicians, and the local pharmacist, medication schedules, and doctor’s appointments.

Find Time for Yourself.

caregiverIt’s important to keep your mind stimulated. Whether that’s by taking a cooking class or binge-watching your favorite show, make time for hobbies and activities that bring you happiness. Don’t underestimate exercise, either. Staying physically active will reduce stress, boost endorphins, and keep you in shape. Aim for 30 minutes of exercise at least three times a week.

Skimp on Sleep.

Make sure you are getting at least six to eight hours of sleep each night. Sleep deprivation hinders memory retention, concentration, and your ability to think rationally. Don’t underestimate the power of naps when you need to recharge.

Neglect Your Relationships.

Don’t forget to make time for your spouse, friends, and family–they need you, too! Hire a babysitter that makes it possible to schedule weekly date nights with your partner or game night with friends. Make sure to be honest with your child about your need for balance.

Ignore the Signs of Burnout.

Do you feel physically, emotionally, or mentally exhausted? Caregiver burnout can happen when nurses don’t get the help they need or try to do more than they are capable of. Signs include losing patience easily, increasing health issues, difficulties sleeping, excessive weight loss or gain, and an inability to focus and make good decisions.
