While swimming pools are a wonderful source of outdoor enjoyment and activity, harsh chemicals like chlorine can wreak havoc on your hair, skin, and nails. If you’re one of the many Hawaiian homeowners who have a pool on your property, it’s important to know about post-pool cleaning and aftercare.  Follow these three tips to make sure you enjoy summer fun safely.

3 Tips for Getting Clean After Splashing in Your Swimming Pool

1. Hair

Swimming is great for your body and mind, but unfortunately, chlorine can do a number on your hair. That’s why preventative measures are important to ensure you’re protected. If you swim regularly, saturate your hair with clean tap water before entering the pool to create a protective layer or use a cap. After you get out of the swimming pool, immediately rinse with clean tap water again. You can also purchase specially formulated shampoo and conditioner for swimmers to remove the chlorine more thoroughly.

2. Skin

Apply lotion in the bathroom after drying off with the door closed; the steam from the shower can help your skin cells lock in moisture more effectively. Also, pay close attention to the backs of your hands, elbows, and knees, as the skin in these areas is thinner and more prone to drying out.

3. Nails

Nails can be a bit trickier to protect. Try adding a hydrating base coat to your manicure routine that will keep your nails strong even when submerged in water. You can also use cuticle oil after swimming to restore moisture.
