Installing a water well is an excellent way to end your dependence on the municipal system or access H2O if you’re in a remote area. Before the installation, however, it is important to have basic knowledge of the process so you are prepared when the contractor begins their work. Henderson Well and Pump has been serving residents in Vernon, NJ, for nearly 60 years. Here, they explain four crucial steps involved in a well installation.

How Water Wells Are Installed

1. Locate the Water Source

The first step in this complex process is to locate the water source underneath the ground. This is commonly referred to as an aquifer, or a bed of water that sits deep below the surface. A contractor uses heavy-duty equipment to drill a hole down to the aquifer. Once it’s located, a casing, which serves as the structural wall for the well, is inserted into the hole. A screen is then placed over the waterbed to protect it from being contaminated by surrounding debris.

2. Install a Pumping Mechanism

Water wellTo get the water to the surface, a pump is needed. There are two types available. A submersible pump sits in the water source and uses force to push the liquid up. A surface-mounted pump, on the other hand, sits above the ground and uses suction to pull the water up from the well. The choice is largely determined by the environmental conditions where the pump will be installed.

3. Build the Pipeline

Next, the infrastructure to get the water from the tank to your home is installed. This involves digging trenches and establishing a network of pipes to funnel H2O to your residence.

4. Install the Tank & Pressure Switch

Lastly, the water tank is installed. It stores the liquid until you turn on the faucets or other water-using features in your home. The flow of water is regulated by a pressure switch, which helps determine when and how often the pump runs.
