Swimming pools aren’t just for taking a refreshing dip or doing laps—it turns out there are many ways to get an effective water-based workout! Whether you have an in-ground or above ground pool, you can improve your fitness levels by incorporating the following exercises into your routine.

5 Perfect Exercises for Your Swimming Pool

1. Pool Walking

Use the water’s resistance to your advantage by making your muscles work from head-to-toe. Stand at a spot in the pool where the water comes up to about neck level. Then, walk in lines back and forth across the pool—width-wise, so the depth won’t change—while working against your own wake.

2. Leg Lifts

Work your abdominal muscles with this simple yet powerful core-sculpting move. Stand in the shallow section with your back to the wall and your arms supporting you on the edge of the pool. Slowly lift both legs up, then down, engaging your core.

3. Balancing Act

swimming pool Kihei HIStand with both feet firmly planted on the bottom of the swimming pool, submerged to about shoulder level. Lift one leg out to the side, then return it to the bottom for one rep. Repeat on both sides to improve balance and stability.

4. Arm Toners

Stand so you’re submerged to your neck but your chin and face are still fully above water. If you have an above ground pool and it’s too shallow, you can lunge to achieve the proper height. Begin with your arms extended in front of you at chest level, palms together. Slowly open your arms all the way out to the side, then bring them back in for one full rep.

5. Flutter Kicks

Tone every muscle in your legs by grabbing hold of the side of the pool and performing underwater flutter kicks. This is also a great move to perform with a kickboard. Perform different types of kicks, such as breast stroke, freestyle, and butterfly kicks, using only your legs to propel you through a series of laps.
