Gutters are an important part of the roofing system, as the tubes channel rain run-off away from the property, preventing basement flooding, foundation damage, and additional problems. Over time, you might notice thread-like vertical marks on the fixtures. Although not a sign of trouble, the stains, known as tiger striping, can make your property appear dingy and reduce its curb appeal. So you can better care for the gutter system, below are three important steps of tiger striping.

3-Step Process of Tiger Striping

1. Pollutants Attach to Water Droplets on the Gutter Lip

Holmen-Wisconsin-guttersWhen it rains, water flows from the roof down into the gutters. Unfortunately, dirt, pollen, oils, and bacteria on the membrane mix with the liquid. When condensation forms, droplets of the polluted water attach to the gutter lip.

2. Gravity Pulls the Droplets Downward

After droplets form on the gutters, gravity naturally pulls the water downward with small streams of liquid slowly following the curvature of the fixtures. If you notice heavy streams of water overflowing from the gutters, call a repair specialist for help. Loose fasteners or fascia damage could cause the excessive run-off.

3. Dirty Water Evaporates on the Gutters

When the liquid evaporates, it leaves behind the original pollutants from the roof. Although tiger striping won’t harm the structural integrity of the gutters, they should be cleaned as soon as the stains form. When left unattended, the dirty condensation will continue to stain the fixtures, making them even harder to clean.
