Unfortunately, bullying is often a common, if unpleasant, part of childhood. An aspect of early learning is developing empathy for others, and there are growing pains along the way. If you suspect your child is being bullied at school, in their preschool program, or at child care, there are some ways you can help. Here are a few tips on how you can address the issue.

3 Steps to Take When You Suspect Bullying

1. Communicate Constantly

Always keep lines of communication open with your child, even if they don’t seem to want to discuss what’s happening at school or the child care center. Comment on their mood and anything out of the ordinary, and let your kid know that they can speak to you about whatever is bothering them. You can also encourage them to talk to their teacher.

2. Teach Coping Skills

Child CareBullying isn’t a problem that you can jump in and solve for your child. Your role as a parent is to teach them how to deal with the situation. Give your kid a few options for handling an unpleasant peer in their life: they can use a “buddy system” with a friend while they’re at school, ignore the bully, or simply walk away.

3. Ensure Trust & Safety

Encourage your child to find a trusted adult. As a parent, you should mention your suspicion to your kid’s teacher or child care provider. Let your little one know who they can talk to and feel safe with if the bullying persists or worsens. Ask the instructor about what they observe at school since your child may not communicate with you as clearly as an objective adult can.
