Experimac Klein is your neighborhood provider of pre-owned, certified Apple devices. Backed by a 1 year warranty, every device sold from our inventory meets the necessary qualifications and standards of any device you’d buy refurbished from Apple or other established retailers like AT&T or Verizon. The assurance and trust you get from Experimac products and services are not standard across the industry though. For that reason, it’s crucial that you know what to look for when shopping for a pre-owned computer. There is a lot of risk involved that often goes unacknowledged until it’s too late and you’ve bought an “all sales are final” computer with costly problems.

Where should you shop for a pre-owned computer?

Of course we’re biased, but when it’s all said and done, we want you making the right decision for you. Competitively priced, we prioritize customer service and fully believe that Experimac Klein is the solution for you when shopping for your iMac, MacBook Pro or MacBook Air. In the event that you’d like to compare pricing or see for yourself, we recommend sticking with any reputable business that can responsibly use words like “certified,” “refurbished,” and “warranty.”

On the other end of the shopping spectrum, we would caution some online retailers with deals that might seem “too good to be true” or from buying direct from the owner. Places like Craigslist, eBay and OfferUp have great selections and deals you can snag, but the ability to verify the computer’s credibility and quality is little to none. Avoid trusting one person’s word and instead choose an established business with customer reviews and trusted warranties.

But what should I be checking when browsing inventory and shopping the credibility of what’s on the market? Here is a great 6-point checklist:

Test drive the computer. Just like buying a pre-owned car, you should consider test driving any used computer before buying, especially if there’s not a protected certification or warranty included. This is extremely important if going through somewhere like Craigslist where your knowledge of the owner, the computer and its condition are all big unknowns. Spend even just a couple hours if possible to try turning on the machine, listening to how it runs, seeing how steady the battery charges, etc. Try connecting to Wi-Fi or playing a video. Look for everyday, expected functions that may not be running like they should. Here, common sense can go a long way if you take your time and make smart observations.

Check its external condition. While dings, cracks and cosmetic damage don’t foresee all internal damage, they definitely should alert you to the possibility of something more. You’ll want to check the frame of the computer and also the screen while its powered on. Make sure there is no haze, discoloration or unusual glares. LCD screens can be very costly to repair or replace depending on the damage, and while Experimac Klein is happy to do all your repairs, we’d rather you not need it from the get-go.

Check the battery. Look at the battery’s activity. Can it hold a large charge or near to nothing at all? A weaker battery life is to be expected when buying a used, uncertified computer but knowing the battery’s state of life helps you determine how soon it will need to be replaced and if the purchase is worth it for you. At Experimac, every computer we sell includes a certified, replaced battery.

If you’ve already bought a pre-owned computer and find yourself with a poor to useless battery, we can fix that for you, no problem. All of our battery repairs and replacements are backed by a 90 day warranty.

Check all input and output ports. Here, we’re referring to all connection points including USB/HDMI ports, headphone and microphone jacks, power cord inputs and even the video camera lens. You don’t want anything unresponsive or seemingly broken. Input and output ports can be a pain to live without when doing daily tasks on a computer like listening to music, connecting to an external hard drive or even just charging your battery.

Check the keyboard and mouse. When test driving your computer, don’t forget to pay attention to how the keyboard, mouse and/or trackpad are functioning. These, as we all know, are essential to using any computer, so signs of heavy use, unusual clicks or any broken keys are not worth it.

Is there a warranty? The myth is that used computers never come with warranties. At Experimac, we include a 1 year warranty with all computers and repairs as well as a 90-day warranty on all batteries. So why choose anything less? There is undeniable value in your next computer purchase having a warranty. Avoid paying costly repairs for accidental damages and faulty systems you inherited from your device’s previous owner. Warranties protect you later down the road and give you peace of mind upon buying a pre-owned computer.
