You’re at a dinner party or at the office water cooler, and your buddy mentions their AirPort in conversation. You shield the fact that you know nothing about what they’re talking about. You nod, agree and throw out some relevant words to avoid looking ignorant to the full suite of Apple devices, products and services.

Big technology brands like to keep consumers like you on your toes. Everyday there’s a new device, a new service, a new upgrade or a new accessory for gizmos and gadgets your grandparents would’ve never imagined. Mainstream household names like iPhone, iPad and iMac are pretty clear. We all have them or at least know others who do. But what about those random products we’ve heard about but never figured out what they really were? Like AirPort.

What is Apple AirPort?

Wait for it–it’s just a fancy, sleek name for Apple’s Wi-Fi. Back when we “partied like it was 1999,” Apple branded their own Wi-Fi as AirPort. Like we mentioned earlier, big technology groups like Apple, Google and HP love to put their own spin on similar branded products for a thousand marketing and financial reasons. While there are definitely some unique features that AirPort offers, it’s not that different from good ole wireless internet. But now that Wi-Fi is the most mainstream tech term, the differentiation of what AirPort can do for consumers is blurred and communicated poorly.

At a minimum, every Apple iMac computer, Macbook Pro, Macbook Air, etc. has AirPort (or Wi-Fi) capability for connecting to any network using the AirPort icon in your device’s menu bar. That’s a given for most Apple users. But there’s more.

What’s the difference between AirPort Express and AirPort Extreme?

AirPort Extreme was originally the name Apple gave to its branded Wi-Fi but now refers to a more powerful router with unique ports and features. AirPort Express is more of a lightweight router often used for music sharing. As a side note, Apple’s Time Capsule for wireless sharing and running your Time Machine backup system with the integration of a built-in hard drive.

AirPort Express. This base station gives your existing router Apple-like capabilities by adding a few Apple features to what you’ve already got.

AirPort Extreme. This base station does everything slightly better than an AirPort Express with the exception of being used to play music through a third party speaker system. It has faster data and can attach itself to an external hard drive for additional storage.

How can I benefit by having an AirPort device?

At Experimac Klein, we sell AirPort base stations to customers regularly who are looking for various modifications and improvements to their current devices and connection capabilities. Our trained staff listens to your needs and helps send you home with the right devices for you.

The AirPort Extreme is a great addition to your technology stack if you’re looking to really boost your network. It contains four gigabit ethernet ports so you can create a wired network with faster data rates.

For more everyday needs, the AirPort Express might be exactly what you’re looking for. Play music directly from an iOS device through your third party speaker system with ease using its built-in 3.5mm mini jack socket (AirPlay). Print directly from an iOS device by just connecting the base station to your printer (AirPrint).

Buy from us, but we invite you to learn more about the features, specs and capabilities of Apple AirPorts: AirPort Extreme and AirPort Express.

Using AirPort is a safe and secure solution for your connectivity needs. If you’ve got Apple devices already, there’s no reason not to invest in the value an AirPort can bring. With a built-in firewall that helps protect your data, AirPort also can allow your guests to have a separate Wi-Fi network to use–perfect for AirBnB homes and small businesses.

You can connect all Apple devices to Wi-Fi using your AirPort. Wirelessly connect your devices to one another or connect third party devices like speakers or printers to streamline your day-to-day tasks.
