Whether you work in senior care or have elderly loved ones, communicating effectively with the seniors in your life is important. Due to common issues that come with age such as hearing loss or impairment, this can seem challenging. But there are steps you can take to improve your conversations, some of which are listed below.

Senior Care Advice for Communicating With Your Loved One

1. Keep Conversations Lighthearted

When speaking with a senior, avoid getting frustrated with them if they are having trouble understanding you. Do your best to keep a positive attitude during interactions with them. If they misunderstand you, don’t get angry. If you are patient and kind in conversing with them, they will likely reciprocate your kindness, which will improve the senior care experience for everyone involved.

2. Speak Up

Unfortunately, hearing loss is a widespread difficulty many seniors face. In senior care, it’s important to speak with the necessary volume and enunciate your words. Don’t shout unnecessarily, but mumbling or trailing off at the end of your sentences will make communication difficult and possibly frustrate your patient or relative. It’s also important to face them when you address them. Not only is this respectful, but it will help them understand you better.

3. Listen Well

It is important that you listen intently when interacting with seniors. Avoid interrupting them when they are speaking or finishing a thought. If your patient, resident, or loved one has Alzheimer’s or dementia, it’s crucial that you be patient with them if they repeat themselves or take a little time to get their words out. Treat them as you would wish to be treated, and be a thoughtful listener.

4. Eliminate Background Noise

Devices such as hearing aids often pick up and magnify other sounds such as the television, radio, or any other noisy device. If your loved one is having trouble hearing you, turn down the volume or take into account your surroundings and do what you can to ensure nothing is interfering with communication.

5. Engage in Conversation They Enjoy

Express interest in topics your loved one enjoys talking about. Ask them about their fondest memories, what their childhood was like, or where they grew up. Seniors often enjoy reminiscing and have amazing stories to share, so take the time to listen to them.
