It may be scary when your child comes to you with a loose tooth if you aren’t sure whether it is normal for them to be losing teeth yet. However, this is common in kids, and there usually isn’t a reason to worry or rush to an emergency dentist. Below is everything you need to know about loose teeth and when to bring your child in to have the issue addressed.

Understanding Loose Teeth

Why Do Teeth Become Loose?

dentistWhile teeth can become loose because of severe oral trauma or childhood periodontal disease, the vast majority of teeth fall out to make room for permanent ones. Most kids start losing three or four teeth a year starting around age 6 until all 20 teeth are replaced by the time they turn about 12. Keep in mind that baby teeth are typically smaller and smoother than permanent adult ones. If you have trouble keeping track of which ones have fallen out, snap a photo of your child’s mouth each time they lose a tooth. By creating an album on your smartphone or tablet, you can easily determine whether to worry about a loose tooth.

When Should You Worry About Loose Teeth?

If your child is experiencing symptoms like red, swollen gums, pain, or a foul taste in their mouth, the loose tooth might be caused by an underlying infection or recent trauma. Always contact your child’s dentist immediately if your kid experiences these issues. By taking a few X-rays and evaluating your child’s oral health, dentists can determine what steps are necessary.
