If you want your garden to flourish, you have to show it tender loving care all year round. That doesn’t mean the work has to get monotonous, however. Different lawn care tasks should be undertaken at various points of the year, allowing you to enjoy your garden in a unique manner each season. Start this year off right with these lawn care suggestions, which will take you from spring to winter.

Here are seasonal steps for beautiful blooms and lush lawns:

  • lawn careSpring: As the weather warms up, it’s time to start feeding your lawn. Apply a nitrogen-rich fertilizer to encourage growth and aerate to ensure roots soak up nutrients. If you are planning to sow seeds or lay turf, now is the time to do so—the risk of frost is low, and the soil will be easy to work with.
  • Summer: As spring transitions to summer and your lawn starts growing, make sure to weed and mow once per week. Sunny days will demand regular watering, manually or with the help of an irrigation system. If the weather is dry, you will want to mow the lawn less. Avoid aerating or scarifying during droughts, as this can damage an already stressed lawn.
  • Fall: If you have trees on your property, your main task in fall is raking leaves. Shred them for your compost pile if you have one—they make for great soil conditioner, especially for plants that like shade. Before the cold sets in, give your lawn another round of aeration and fertilization. Choose a mix that is high in potassium, which strengthens grass for winter.
  • Winter: Your garden might look like it’s sleeping but there is plenty of action underneath the soil in winter, from roots growing to seeds germinating. Now, lawn care is all about protection. Avoid walking on the grass when there is frost on the ground and don’t leave items—like sleds—lying around. This can cause the grass underneath to suffer, leading to brown patches when the snow melts.
