Classic cars are more than a hobby; they’re a valuable investment. Many classic car owners don’t drive their vehicles often; these one-of-a-kind beauties need to be protected from harsh elements, and many aren’t suited for high-speed or long-distance travel. It’s sometimes necessary to store the car for a season or longer. Northgate Mini Storage in Jacksonville, AR, explains five steps to preparing for vehicle storage

5 Steps to Prepare Your Classic Car for Vehicle Storage

1. Fill the Tank & Change the Oil

Top off liquids, including the gas. A full tank prevents moisture from accumulating and causing rust. Add a fuel stabilizer, which prevents gas from hardening and going bad. Drive the car a few miles after adding the stabilizer to allow it to flow through the system and top it off afterward. Like the stabilizer, fresh oil and a new filter ensure the fuel won’t spoil while the car is in storage.

2. Get It Detailed & Prepped

Wash and wax the exterior and clean the interior with an upholstery cleaner. Vacuum the floors and seats. Wipe the dashboard and steering wheel for dust and oil. Before putting the vehicle away, ensure the interior is completely dry to prevent mold and rust.

3. Fill the Tires & Put the Car on Jacks

vehicle-storage-jacksonville-ARTires are pricey, especially for classic cars. Fill them up to the suggested PSI and, if you’re storing the car for a few months or longer, jack it up to relieve weight from the tires. Elevating the vehicle also prevents the tires from flat spotting.

4. Address the Battery

Disconnect the battery if you won’t be driving for a while. Batteries self-discharge if not used on a regular basis. Once it’s disconnected, attach a float charger, battery tender, or smart charger. Store the battery in a safe place above the ground and away from the cold. Check the battery terminal for corrosion and clean it with a solution of baking soda, petroleum jelly, and distilled water.

5. Park It in a Safe Place

Once it’s ready to be stored, pick a secure vehicle storage space. A heated garage or climate-controlled unit is best. If selecting a self-storage facility, make sure there are rodent control measures and the unit can protect your car from the elements. Also, confirm there are adequate surveillance and security.
