In Wisconsin, motorists are legally required to maintain a minimum amount of liability insurance for their vehicles. However, this minimum may not be enough to protect you in the event of an accident or another unfortunate incident. In the following sections, Coverra Insurance Services explains the difference between liability and physical damage coverage auto insurance, so you can choose the level of protection you need.

Liability Coverage

Auto insuranceIn insurance terms, Wisconsin is known as a 25/50/10 state. In other words, Wisconsin law requires drivers to purchase liability coverage of at least $25,000 per person for bodily injury with a maximum of $50,000 per accident for all injured parties. It also requires a minimum of $10,000 property damage liability insurance to cover property damage to others for which you are legally liable. Liability insurance only covers injuries and damages to others, not to you or your passengers. It also covers the costs of defending a lawsuit. Any damage beyond those limits—or damages suffered to your vehicle—are your responsibility.

Physical Damage Coverage

In addition to liability coverage that covers bodily injury and property damage to others for which you are legally liable, you probably want to consider collision, and comprehensive coverage. Collision coverage reimburses the cost of repairs to your own vehicle if it’s damaged in a collision, while comprehensive coverage handles non-driving incidents, such as fire, flood, theft, or vandalism.

Other Coverage

Other coverage to talk to your agent about include both uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage, medical payments coverage, towing and rental reimbursement coverage.
