Effective Leadership in a Multi-Generational Workplace, Huntington, New York

Successful businesses rely on a diverse workplace made up of employees from different generations and backgrounds. Each group brings fresh perspectives and abilities to the table. However, managing such a diverse group of people can be difficult, especially when you’re trying to find ways to inspire and motivate the entire team. Effective leadership requires an understanding of your team and their generational background.

The 3 Generations in the Workplace

When you look at the demographics of your office, you’ll likely find three distinct generations under the senior management team. These are the Baby Boomers, Generation Xers, and Millennials.

  • Baby Boomers: Baby boomers make up the bulk of most upper management teams, as they have the most corporate experience. Boomers as a group are hardworking, believe in consistent communications and teamwork, and often help train the younger generations to progress in their careers.
  • Generation X: These individuals are typically mid-career and thrive in a collaborative environment. Having worked with the Boomers most of their lives, they’ve learned from senior team members and are typically highly adaptable both in their job duties and company structures.
  • Millennials: This group is quickly becoming the bulk of the workforce. Having grown up with technology and social media, they know how to keep older companies relevant, so your message resonates with the largest audience possible. Millennials are also driven and looking for long-term careers, stability, and upward growth.

Effective Leadership for Multiple Generations

Effective LeadershipThough your employees will all ultimately work to grow your business, they will often work in different ways. The senior management teams need to recognize the differences in generational characteristics to effectively manage a diverse workforce.

Here are a few simple tips to help:

  • Vary Your Training Materials: The way Boomers learn new information is different than Millennials. For example, Millennials favor interactive software programs and training modules, while Boomers and a good portion of Gen Xers prefer traditional presentations and one-on-one instruction.
  • Consider Flexibility: Technology has made coming into the office more optional than necessary. To foster morale and get the most out of each group, consider allowing your team to telecommute for part of the week or pick their own work hours. This way, they’ll be able to work wherever and whenever they’re most productive. Best of all, the flexibility will help in employee retention and job satisfaction.
  • Ask for Feedback: No matter what generation your team falls into, they want to feel like their opinions are heard. Ask for feedback on your processes, and take that information into consideration when making adjustments to the work structure.
