Whether you have an existing pergola you want to spruce up or you’re building a new one, incorporating lighting is a great way to add warmth and coziness to an outdoor living space. First, you have to understand what your lighting options are. Then, you have to determine whether the option is feasible for your structure and budget.

A Guide to Pergola Lighting Options

1. Built-In Lights

pergolaBuilt-in lights are a great option if you want soft background lighting. They’re ideal for pergolas that have not yet been built, or for those that are close to your house. This ensures you won’t have ugly wires that detract from the beauty of your structure when it’s lit up in the evening. With built-in lights, you have several options, including small lighting placed along the beams in intervals, or larger fixtures attached to each corner.

2. String Lights

String lights are the most economical lighting solution and are easy to install yourself. It’s a great option for both freestanding pergolas with their own electrical outlets built in or those who have one nearby. You can customize your string lights for a low cost, choosing from traditional twinkle lights to globe or Edison bulbs. Hang them just around the perimeter of the pergola, or weave them in and out the beams for more light.

3. Hanging Lights

If your pergola is situated close to your home, hanging lights are a good option as you can discreetly place any wires. It’s possible to install hanging lights yourself, which can save you a little money, too. For a softer effect, choose smaller hanging lights and cluster them together at the center or the corners. If you want a brighter atmosphere, choose larger fixtures instead.

4. Mounted Fixtures

As the name suggests, mounted fixtures are mounted onto your pergola, typically on each of the four posts. They aren’t easy to install on existing pergolas, so they’re ideal if you’re just starting the building process. Otherwise, consider hiring a professional.

5. Up-Lighting

Up-lighting involves placing lights at the base of the pergola or deck or patio and directing them upwards. These lights are soft and dim, creating a cozy atmosphere, but they’re tricky to install. If your pergola will be on a deck or patio, you may need to consult with a builder for installation.
