Some people wear their scars with pride, while others want to hide the imperfections. According to the staff at Ailie Wellness Center, an alternative health facility in Cincinnati, OH, undergoing a painful medical procedure isn’t the only way to reduce scars. They often recommend essential oils to repair blemishes, as the liquids contain plant compounds that reduce the risk of scarring for healing wounds.

Below, the alternative health specialists explain how to use essential oils for scar prevention and reduction:

  • alternative-healthStop Swelling With Coconut Oil: After getting injured, the body’s inflammatory response mechanism kicks into gear. Although swelling prevents bacteria from entering an open wound, the sensation can be painful. To reduce irritation, wash out the cut and apply coconut oil. It contains lauric acid, which boasts anti-inflammatory properties to provide pain relief. The oil is also used to treat chronic inflammation, reducing the raised appearance of old scars.
  • Prevent Infection With Thyme Oil: To prevent infection and reduce the risk of permanent scarring, apply thyme oil to the wound. The oil contains caryophyllene and camphene, which stop bacterial growth and kill infectious organisms. It also flushes harmful toxins out of the body to correct skin disorders and old scarring.
  • Repair Skin With Helichrysum Italicum: If an open wound doesn’t need to drain, apply helichrysum italicum. The essential oil contains neryl acetate, a chemical compound that stimulates new cell production. This improves blood flow to capillaries so the wound heals faster. The oil also contains italidones, which strengthen skin as it’s being repaired. If the wound has already healed, helichrysum italicum promotes cell regeneration to fade the scar.
