Choosing draperies seems like a simple task — until you find yourself leafing through home decor catalogs, struggling to choose from hundreds of options. From different materials to diverse hanging styles, there are many elements to consider. This primer to three basic types of draperies can help you narrow down the selection.

3 Common Draperies

1. Ringed & Barred Panels

fabricsRing-top draperies have grommets attached to the top of the fabric panel; these hang on the curtain rod. Rod-pocket draperies simply have a channel sewn at the top of the fabric panel, which the curtain rod slips through. Both ring-top and rod-pocket draperies can be opened manually, making them great options for windows you use frequently.

2. Pleated Panels

This classic window treatment creates pleats in the curtain with the help of header tape sewn to the panel’s back. Hanging hooks are inserted into the tape, allowing the panel to hang on rings or traverse rods. When the drapes are pulled together, pleats are formed thanks to the tape. Different types of pleats — from thin single “pencil” pleats to larger “tuxedo” pleats — are possible. Overall, these offer a more formal appearance than ringed and barred options.

3. Tab-Top Panels

These draperies are created with loops of fabric sewn into or onto the fabric panel’s top seam. These “tabs” line the top of the drapery and are used to hang it on the curtain rod. This more casual style of window treatment is often used in country or cottage looks. Note that such draperies are for windows that you rarely open because they can be difficult to open.
