Mooresville Plumber Shares 3 DIY Tips for Unclogging a Toilet, Coddle Creek, North Carolina

A clogged toilet is a real disaster that everyone experiences at some point. Fortunately, with a little ingenuity and a few household items, most clogged toilets are fixed without calling in a professional plumber. If you have a toilet that won’t flush, here are a few tips to try.

3 DIY Tips for Unclogging a Toilet

1. Use a Plunger

plumberAs the easiest-to-use and most effective option, a toilet plunger should be your first choice. Before using it, make sure it’s the right tool—toilet plungers are shaped like a bell, while the familiar dome-shaped ones are made for sinks. Plunge gently at first to push the air out of the bell, then push in and out to dislodge any clogs.

2. Add Soapy Water

Dish soap increases the viscosity of the water, which may clear out the clog. Start by squirting normal dishwashing soap into the bowl, then pour in a full pot of hot water. The movement of the water should help clear the pipes.

3. Try Baking Soda & Vinegar

This combination unclogs a variety of stubborn drains. Add one cup of regular baking soda into the bowl, followed by a cup of white vinegar. Let the ingredients work for about five minutes, then add a small kettle of hot water, which will hopefully dislodge the rest of the clog.
