If your fireplace has seen better days, but you’d rather not replace it, you can still give it a fresh new makeover. Your renovation can be as simple as a new fireplace surround or even just a coat of paint. So if your budget is limited, but you still appreciate the look of a stately fireplace, Stone World at Red Bank in New Jersey has a few recommendations.

Try one of the following:

  • Drywalling: Just want to change your fireplace’s color and not much else? Consider covering it with a layer of drywall or plaster. This is similar to priming a regular wall, as you’ll now be able to repaint it with your desired new texture or color. This tip works particularly great for concrete or brick fireplaces.

  • fireplace surroundsNew Fireplace Surround: If your fireplace no longer complements the rest of your décor, you can fix that with a new fireplace surround. These can be made from a wide variety of materials, with some of the most lasting ones made from natural stone. Have a new surround installed if you don’t have the budget for a completely new fireplace.

  • Whitewashing: This has a more subtle effect than a regular coat of paint in that it will transform your fireplace’s look while accentuating its original textures. Whitewashing looks particularly good on brick or natural stone. Start by cleaning up your fireplace, then painting it off-white or eggshell. Instead of letting it dry completely, wipe away the first coat after a few minutes. (It may be easiest to do this in sections, and you may need multiple coats for your desired shade.) To partially reveal your fireplace’s texture, use a sanding sponge.
