If you are a first-time dog owner or your veterinarian has suggested you try a new food, there’s a good chance you’re overwhelmed by the many dog food options on the market. From store brands to premium brands, from dry foods to wet, it’s hard to know which one is right for your dog. Here are three important factors to consider when making your choice.

3 Factors When Choosing a Dog Food

1. Age

veterinarianDogs at different life stages have different dietary needs. Puppies have greater daily nutritional requirements than older dogs because their bones, muscles, organs and joints are still growing. A puppy food will have the nutrients a dog needs for this developmental stage. It has a high fat and protein content to support a puppy’s growth needs. Senior dogs, on the other hand, are less active than puppies or adult dogs, and they need fewer calories. Senior dog food is made to accommodate, so your older dog doesn’t become overweight.

2. Breed & Size

The dietary needs of a chihuahua are different from the dietary needs of a German shepherd. Their different body types mean they develop different health issues, and their food is made to help prevent some of these issues. Large breeds are prone to orthopedic problems, so food that has a careful balance of vitamins and minerals is important. Small breeds have high metabolisms and need a calorie-dense food.

3. Special Dietary Needs

Dogs of all breeds can develop health issues that require a special food. There are foods especially for digestive care, urinary tract problems, and joint health, to name a few. If you think your dog needs one of these special foods, talk to your veterinarian about the benefits and how to best go about switching your dog’s food.

Good nutrition for your dog can lay the foundation for a long, healthy life. If you’re still not sure what kind of food is right for your dog, ask your veterinarian to suggest a few different foods in a range of price points.
