From handing out treats to dressing up in costumes, Halloween provides plenty of fun for the entire family. Although you can purchase outfits and decor at your local retail shop, the specialists at The Sewing Center in Kalispell, MT, say there are plenty of reasons to make these items from scratch. This ensures your creations are truly one of a kind.

Below, the Flathead County sewing experts share three fun do-it-yourself projects to try this Halloween:

  • Candy Bags: If your children plan to go trick-or-treating, they’ll need easy-to-hold, strong bags to carry the loot. For a whimsical touch, create trick-or-treat bags that look like sugary treats. To create the Halloween favorite candy corn, take a few strips of yellow, orange, and white felt and sew them together to resemble the candy. Use a piece of complementary ribbon or rope for the handle.
  • sewingCostumes: If you want to try your hand at a more elaborate arts and crafts project, opt to make this year’s Halloween costumes. This offers more customization, as you can easily change the fabric or color to your choice. If you aren’t completely confident with your sewing skills, there are several free patterns available for beginners.
  • Hats: If you don’t plan to don a costume, you can still look festive in a Halloween hat. To make a witch hat, take a large piece of black felt and place a durable piece of paper or cardboard on top. Form the materials into a cone shape, sewing the ends of the fabric together. Next, cut another piece of black fabric into a circle, cutting out space in the middle. Sew this onto the cone to create the hat brim.
