Silk screen printing is a technique in which ink is transferred onto a substrate using mesh and stencil, and it can be applied to everything from printed wallpaper to vehicle wraps. One of its most common uses is for T-shirts and other apparel. Screen printing is a great way to apply custom-made graphics to clothing, but, over time, fabric softens and become worn down, affecting the quality of the print. Even cleaning vehicle wraps can cause them to lose quality. If you want your screen-printed items to look like new for as long as possible, take these steps to protect them before you wash them.

3 Tips for Protecting Silk Screen Printed Items

1. Avoid Friction

screen printingBefore you throw your shirt in the washing machine, make sure it is turned inside out. Not only will this prevent your shirt itself from fading, but it will also protect the graphic from being exposed to friction, which can cause it to loosen or crack. Similarly, don’t use friction when washing any item with screen printing. Avoid using hard-bristled brushes and harsh cleaning chemicals when cleaning cars with vehicle wraps.

2. Use the Right Settings

For apparel, make sure your washing machine is set to use cold water on the gentle cycle. Heat can also batter your graphic, whether it’s on a shirt or side of a car. Don’t use hot water to clean, and avoid ironing any clothing with screen prints.

3. Wash Less Often

Your screen-printed product will benefit from fewer washings overall, regardless of what it is. If shirts aren’t stained or sweaty, hang them up and wear them again without washing. Only give your vehicle wrap a thorough cleaning a few times a year.
