If your drains keep clogging and you can’t determine why, you might need more than conventional drain cleaners. Particularly severe clogs need the attention of professional plumbers, who are outfitted to use a technology called water jetting. It’s a lot stronger and more comprehensive than other drain cleaning methods, and when properly applied, it can give your plumbing a second chance. All Star Rooter, Fairfield County, CT’s leading drain service, explains more below, including what water jetting is and when you might need it.

What Is Water Jetting?

water jettingWater jetting entails blasting high-pressure water through pipes. It is highly effective at removing grease, scale, and debris buildup, and is much more thorough than other conventional methods, such as rodding. Water jetting requires a strong hose connected to a tank and pressurizer. Pressurizers can vary the amount of pressure given to the water—up to 5,000 pounds per square inch. Plumbers usually blast the water “upstream,” or from the bottom of the plumbing system upwards, dislodging debris and allowing it to drain properly. Only trained professionals can perform water jetting, as the appropriate pressure varies depending on the situation.

When Do I Need Water Jetting?

After heavy use, pipes can become heavily clogged with materials like hair, soap residue, grease, and scale buildup. Plumbing systems older than a few decades can even get clogged by tree roots. Water jetting can remove all of these blockages. There are only a few situations in which it isn’t effective, such as extensive tree root penetration or when pipes have already become damaged.
