Updating an outdated HVAC system is not a task that should be undertaken lightly. This is a significant and costly home upgrade and requires a lot of research to ensure you install a new unit that meets all of your family’s comfort needs. To help point you in the right direction, here are a few of the more popular options below.

The HVAC Buying Guide

Central Air Systems

The most common type of HVAC system you’ll run into is a central air system. These units consist of a condenser coil and compressor housed outdoors and an evaporator coil inside the home that is usually combined with a furnace. In the summer, the compressor pumps refrigerant through the coils, where warm air is blown across to transfer heat energy into the refrigerant. This leaves behind cool air that is then recirculated into the home.

During the winter, combustion gases are created in the furnace and are then passed through the heat exchanger. Cool air in the home is then passed over the heat exchanger to warm it before it re-enters the home through a system of ducts.

Heat Pump System

hvac thomasville ncMany people often confuse a heat pump for a central air conditioner because it also uses refrigerant to operate. However, in this instance, the unit is actually a mechanical-compression cycle refrigeration system. This means the compressor is able to circulate refrigerant to either absorb or release heat depending on whether it is needed or not. So, there is no need for a second appliance inside the home to heat it during the winter. Also, since it only moves heat instead of generating it, this HVAC system is often more energy efficient than the split system.

Hybrid Heat Split System

While heat pump systems are very energy efficient, they are less adept at keeping homes warm when it is less than 40 degrees outside. If you live in an area that is prone to harsh winters but still want to limit your fuel use, you should consider a hybrid heat split system.

A heat pump will stay in use until temperatures start to plummet, and then a furnace will take over to ensure your home stays comfortably heated. Usually, you’ll also have the option to install one or two fans as well. One will help warm air to circulate when it is slightly cold, but when it gets frigid, you can turn on two to ensure the furnace is able to pump out enough warm air.
