No one likes a surprise skunk encounter, including your pets. Skunks aren’t scared of humans and often aren’t afraid of cats or dogs, either. Fortunately, according to the wildlife removal experts at A.S.A.P. Critter People in Cleveland, OH, there are steps you can take to avoid an odoriferous attack on you or your pet.

4 Ways to Protect Your Pet from Skunks

1. Feed Your Pets Indoors

Skunks are omnivorous. They eat animals such as insects, grubs, earthworms, frogs, eggs, and rodents, as well as plant matter, including berries, roots, nuts, and leaves. However, skunks may struggle to find enough natural food sources in settled areas. When this happens, they eat what they can find, including pet food that’s been left outside. To prevent a skunk encounter, feed your pets indoors. Put your cat's food up high if you have to feed them outside. Skunks aren’t good climbers, though cats are dexterous and can jump.

2. Close Trash Cans

To prevent them from going through your garbage, seal it in an appropriate container. Pests are much more likely to invade properties with plentiful food sources. By removing these, you decrease the risk of a surprise encounter.

3. Block Access to Open Areas

Close the doors to garages and sheds. Also, seal off open areas beneath your house or deck. Skunks sometimes use these cavities to seek shelter from weather or predators. Females also commonly use these spaces as a safe place to build a den and rear their babies. Young skunks can pose a particular problem because they sometimes can’t control themselves and may release odor inadvertently. If you suspect a skunk family is living under your house, call a wildlife removal specialist.

4. Remove Yard Waste & Tree Stumps

Like many critters, skunks are attracted to piles of brush and old tree stumps as these can be suitable places for a den. Clean up piles of branches, brush, and leaves and have tree stumps removed. This will make the property less appealing to skunks as well as raccoons, rodents, and many other unwelcome guests.
