If you've always dreamed of having a sewing room to do all of your projects but don't seem to have space for one—there’s a solution. With a bit of creativity, you can make even a closet into a designated space for your sewing machine and accessories. In fact, The Sewing Center, a one-stop-shop for all crafters in Kalispell, MT, has shared their top three ways to convert a small space into a sewing room.

Consider these ideas to create the work space you've always wanted.

  • sewingUse Shoe Hangers: Over-the-door, clear shoe organizers are an excellent way to maximize space and storage. You can easily fit all of your sewing accessories into these compartments and still have room to spare. Especially with a small area, such as a closet, there is not room for a large dresser, chest, or storage. This is an excellent way to stay organized, tidy, and still have everything you need in one area.

  • Utilize Extension Cords: If converting an unconventional space into a sewing room, you may not have direct access to a power source to run your sewing machine. However, this can easily be solved with an extension cord and power strip. Simply store both items in your closet or small room and take them out as needed. The preparation and cleanup time is a simple price to pay to have your own craft room.

  • Remove Some Shelving: If using a closet, you will want to have enough room to insert a table and chair. This may require the removal of shelving or clothing bars. However, leave some of the higher shelves in place. You can use these to store other sewing gear. In fact, you may want to leave a clothing bar as well, so you can hang up and show off all of the articles you have created.

Even a space as small as a closet can function as a craft room. When you need more supplies, a sewing machine repair, or even lessons, consider The Sewing Center.
